What Is a String Bikini?

A string bikini is swimwear held together by ties: thin strings or straps that tie at the sides, neck and back instead of using fabric panels for the fit. The ties are the structure — which is why string styles adjust so well, and why they pack so small for travel.

String describes the construction, not the coverage: string bikinis run from full-coverage bottoms to thong and micro cuts, depending on the style. A “thong-string” bikini is simply a thong bottom built with string construction — the two ideas combine rather than compete.

The useful comparison is the other direction: string bikinis come in every coverage level, from full to micro, while thong styles are defined by the minimal back. If you want structure that adjusts, choose string; if you want minimal back coverage, choose a thong cut.
