What Is a Low Rise Bikini?

A low rise bikini is a bikini whose bottoms sit below the navel, with the waistband resting at hip level. “Rise” describes where the waistband sits on the torso — low, mid or high — and it is a property of the bottoms, not the top.

Because the band sits low, more of the lower torso shows above the waistband than on a mid or high rise. The rise is a line choice: the same top reads differently on low-rise, mid-rise and high-rise bottoms.

Rise is where the band sits; the leg opening is a separate line.

Low Rise vs. Mid Rise vs. High Rise

Three rise positions describe where a bikini bottom’s waistband sits:

• Low rise — below the navel, at or just under the hip bones.
• Mid rise — around the navel.
• High rise — above the navel, up toward the natural waist.

High-rise bottoms cover more of the torso; low-rise bottoms cover less above the band. Neither is “better” — the rise sets the waistband line and how much torso is covered.
