What Are Padded Bikinis?

A padded bikini top has foam or molded lining built into the cup, so the cup holds its own shape whether or not you are wearing it. Padded is a cup construction — not a style, not a cut — which is why padded tops show up as halters, triangles, push-ups and bandeaus across the store.

How Padded Cups Are Built

Padding works at three points of the cup, and listings name them differently:

• The foam layer — a molded or sewn-in foam sheet inside the cup; molded foam holds a dome shape, sewn-in foam follows the fabric.
• The cup shape — full cups cover more, demi cups less, and the foam sits inside either shape.
• The lift angle — when the cup is cut with an upward angle and foam behind it, that is the push-up construction; padding alone does not angle the cup.

A listing that says push-up is almost always padded. A listing that says padded may or may not angle the cup — read the words and the photos together, and you will know which construction you are getting.

Padded vs Push-Up vs Underwire

Three cup words describe three different parts, and they overlap in listings:

• Padded — foam inside the cup; the cup carries its shape.
• Push-up — a lift-angle cup cut, usually with padding behind it; a push-up is padded by default, but padding is not automatically push-up.
• Underwire — a wire sewn under the cup for structure; underwire can sit under a padded or an unpadded cup.

In practice: padded + push-up is the most common combination in this collection, padded alone appears in molded triangle and string tops, and underwire-padded sets sit in the underwire collection across the store. If you want the lift, look for push-up wording; if you want shape only, padded is enough.

Getting the Fit Right

Padded cups do not stretch — the band carries the fit, and the foam keeps the shape the band gives it. Three checks before you order:

• Measure under the bust first — the band number, not the cup letter, decides how padded cups sit.
• Read the photos for cup height — molded cups sit differently across sizes; compare the model shot against the chart.
• Expect a snug first wear — foam does not give like knit; if the band feels loose in the photos' range, size down.

In the wash, protect the foam itself: rinse after salt or chlorine, hand-wash in cold water and lay flat. Twisting or wringing creases molded cups, and the dryer flattens them — padded tops get the gentle treatment.
