What Are Underwire Bikinis?

An underwire bikini top has a wire sewn into the fabric along the bottom edge of each cup. The wire frames the cup so the top keeps its structure in and out of the water — underwire is a construction detail, not a style, which is why it appears across halters, bandeaus, push-ups and one-pieces.

How an Underwire Works

• Holds structure wet — fabric relaxes in water, but the wire keeps the cup's line — the structural reason people choose underwire for water.

The wire sits inside a channel of fabric along the cup bottom. On well-made pieces the channel is sewn closed; on adjustable pieces the wire may move slightly inside the channel — neither changes how it fits when the band is right.

Underwire vs Padded vs Wire-Free

Cup construction comes in three flavors, and they combine:

• Underwire — a wire under the cup for structure; the defining feature of this collection.
• Padded — foam inside the cup; underwire and padding answer different questions, and many tops here carry both.
• Wire-free — no wire at all; soft cups rely on seams, fabric and the band. Wire-free tops sit outside this collection.

If the cup has a wire and foam, it is underwire-padded. If it has a wire and no foam, it is underwire-only. If it has foam and no wire, it belongs to the padded family — three combinations, one clear choice per top.

Getting the Fit Right

Underwire fit is band-first: the wire only works when the band sits level and snug against the body. Three checks before you order:

• Measure under the bust — the wire follows the band, so the underbust number matters more than the cup letter.
• Check the wire channel in photos — the wire should sit flat against the body line, not angled or riding.
• Know the poke signal — if a wire pokes or digs, the size is off, not the style; size down or up on the band, never on the cup alone.

Care keeps the wire straight: hand-wash in cold water and lay flat. Machine washing bends wires over time, and wringing twists them — underwire pieces get the gentlest treatment in the drawer.
